Powerball says its jackpot has climbed to about $1.1 billion ahead of Monday’s drawing.
If someone wins, it will be the sixth-largest prize in Powerball’s history.
Billion-dollar jackpots have become more common as more people buy tickets.

For anyone hoping for a Christmas miracle, consider a Powerball ticket: The jackpot is again reaching record highs.

The top prize has hit an estimated $1.1 billion ahead of Monday night’s drawing, with a lump-sum cash option of $503.4 million. It is the sixth-largest jackpot in Powerball history.

The prize rolled over after no ticket matched all six numbers in the latest drawing. The run has now stretched to 43 drawings, setting a record for the longest streak in a single Powerball cycle. The jackpot was last won in September, when two tickets in Missouri and Texas split $1.787 billion.

Billion-dollar jackpot prizes have become more frequent as more players buy tickets. A $2.04 billion win in California in 2022 remains the largest lottery prize in history; jackpots topping $1 billion have appeared several times since.

Even without a jackpot winner, plenty of players collected big prizes over the weekend. Seven tickets won $1 million or more in the most recent drawing. Five matched all five white balls for $1 million, while two doubled their winnings to $2 million by adding the Power Play option. Dozens more won $50,000 or $100,000.

The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million. So don’t get too excited.

Powerball tickets cost $2 and are sold in 45 states, as well as Washington, DC; Puerto Rico; and the US Virgin Islands. More than half of each ticket sale stays in the jurisdiction where it was purchased, according to the Multi-State Lottery Association, the nonprofit that manages Powerball. The association said in a press release that since its launch in 1992, the game has helped generate over $37 billion for public programs.

Drawings take place every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 10:59 p.m. ET.
