Starbucks announced last week that it would close approximately 250 coffeehouses across North America, representing just under 1% of its more than 18,000 locations in the region.
In a memo to employees, chief operating officer Mike Grams said Starbucks had identified stores where it could not consistently provide its desired customer and employee experience or see a path to acceptable financial performance.
The company said affected employees would be offered transfers where possible, while those it could not place elsewhere would receive severance.
The closures are part of Starbucks’ “Back to Starbucks” turnaround strategy, which seeks to improve service and restore stores as welcoming places for customers to spend time.
They follow a 2025 restructuring that resulted in the net closure of 107 North American locations.
The company has not released a complete list of the affected stores, and did not comment when asked to confirm which stores have closed by Business Insider. All locations that have closed have signage up to notify customers, Starbucks said.

To create the map below, Business Insider started with a list compiled by an independent Starbucks location tracker who goes by “Winter,” and published on Starbucks Everywhere, Winter’s website that tracks Starbucks locations.
Winter said he compiled the list using store schedules on Starbucks’ website and calls to affected stores.
Business Insider then verified each location using Starbucks’ online store locator and Google Maps. We classified a store as closed only if it no longer appeared in Starbucks’ locator and Google Maps marked it as permanently closed.
Using this method, we mapped 239 store closures. Business Insider was unable to independently verify the other 11 closures included on Winter’s list.
