This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Amelia Christie-Miller, the 32-year-old founder and CEO of Bold Bean Co. She is from the UK and based in Barcelona. The following has been edited for length and clarity. When I founded Bold Bean Co. in 2021, I was working at a sustainability company in London and had become obsessed with the idea that beans could solve many of the world’s problems.I juggled my job and Bold Bean Co. for about a year before I went full-time with my business that fall.Beans are so fundamental to soil health and our journey toward…
Four years ago, Pinterest was bleeding users. The platform known for mood boards had made a big effort to compete with TikTok — as did nearly every other social media platform at the time — with short-form video, shoppable livestreaming, and paying creators. It didn’t work. When Bill Ready took over as Pinterest’s CEO in 2022, he felt the company needed a new direction.”I didn’t think the world needed a fourth or fifth best TikTok,” Ready told Business Insider in an interview. Ready, who left his previous post as Google’s president of commerce, decided that a search experience that was both personalized…
For a time, the four-day workweek seemed like it just might happen.Like pandemic-era fixations we thought would last forever — looking at you, sourdough starter — the dream of working 32 hours a week for 40 hours’ pay seemed within reach for some. Now, years later, hiring is sluggish, CEOs are demanding that workers lock in, and 9-9-6 memes can feel as pervasive as 6-7 mishegoss. The chill settling over the workplace means that many workers’ hopes for four-day weeks are on ice — for now. There appears to be “a pushback from management on the things that workers were gaining during the…
Instead of sending out résumés and job applications during the Great Freeze, it could be a good time to get a business plan in order.Ege Aksu, an economist at workforce intelligence company Revelio Labs, analyzed shifts in US entrepreneurship and hiring over the past few years, using data from public professional profiles on platforms like LinkedIn posted between 2019 and this past June. Clear patterns emerged: when hiring fell, the share of job switchers transitioning into entrepreneurship tended to heat up.Aksu told Business Insider that people may be starting businesses out of necessity. Despite better-than-expected job growth in September, job…
The stereotypical millennial plight goes something like this: A guy or gal staring down 40 is trapped in a perpetual struggle to launch. They’ve finally moved out of their parents’ homes, but later than their judgmental relatives expected. They’re getting around to marriage and kids, but they’re forever screwed on housing, still trying to shake the ghosts of the post-Great Recession job market, and drowning in student debt. They’ve developed a strange animosity toward their baby boomer parents, who seemingly had it all and won’t let go.Much of this stereotype, however, is more feeling than fact, especially when it’s repeated…
Allison Stransky, chief marketing officer at Samsung Electronics Americas, shared in a video interview for CMO Insider how the brand is trying to help consumers embrace AI-connected homes, the inspiring inventions coming out of its student competition, and how her favorite AI device doesn’t have a screen.Following is an edited transcript and video of the interview.Artificial intelligence is a concept that we are talking about in everything that we do. At Samsung, AI currently exists in all of our categories, across almost all of our products. While AI has come into the consumer lexicon recently, we’ve been innovating in AI…

It has been edited for length and clarity.I first came to Penang, Malaysia, in 1968, when I was 8. My father was in the Australian Air Force and was stationed at the Butterworth base on the mainland for three years. My family loved it.For many in the Air Force, it was considered a dream posting. The food, the warmth of the people, and the blend of cultures made it unlike anywhere else. She spent three years living in Penang, Malaysia, as…
Nvidia is pushing back after investor Michael Burry of “The Big Short” fame took aim at the company.A note Nvidia sent to a Wall Street analyst, a copy of which was obtained by Business Insider, addresses a spate of recent criticisms and claims made about the company and names Burry directly. It specifically cited an X post Burry made last week that said Nvidia’s stock-based compensation had hurt shareholder value, “reducing owner’s earnings by 50%.”The memo offered this direct response to Burry’s claims:”Nvidia repurchased $91B shares since 2018, not $112.5B; Mr. Burry appears to have incorrectly included RSU taxes. Employee…
A family-owned, 77-year-old furniture retailer has filed for bankruptcy protection — and said the sluggish housing market was partly to blame.American Signature Inc., the Ohio-based parent company behind the Value City Furniture and American Signature Furniture chains, plans to shutter more than two dozen stores across the US as it reorganizes its debt, court papers show. The retailer, which had already announced plans to close several stores, mostly in Tennessee, now plans to shut down a total of 33 stores, or roughly one-quarter of its total, it said in court filings. The company currently employs about 3,000 people and runs more…
Less than a year after it was born, DOGE has officially lost its center. Scott Kupor, the director of the Office of Personnel Management, pushed back against a recent article from Reuters quoting him as saying DOGE “doesn’t exist” and is not a “centralized entity” anymore.Kupor, whose agency handles human resources for the government, said that the outlet misrepresented his quotes and that DOGE’s main goals continue to guide Trump’s agenda, even if its central office is gone.”DOGE may not have centralized leadership under USDS,” he said in a post on Sunday. “But, the principles of DOGE remain alive and…
