A new JPMorgan Chase report is shedding light on the chilling effect that the H-1B visa overhaul could have on the American labor market. The report, published Tuesday, predicts that the US may see 5,500 fewer work authorizations each month as companies chafe at the eye-popping $100,000 cost for every new application they file. They reached that number by taking the total number of new employment petitions for fiscal 2024, or 141,000, and projecting how many of them were processed in consulates outside the United States. Those roughly 65,000 consular petitions are most likely to be impacted by the new fee, the…
“Jimmy Kimmel Live!” returned to air with an emotional monologue Tuesday night, roughly one week after the late-night show was suspended by Disney’s ABC broadcast network. The program was initially pulled “indefinitely” following comments by host Kimmel during a show monologue that criticized members of President Donald Trump’s MAGA movement for their reaction to conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s killing.”It was never my intention to make light of the murder of a young man,” Kimmel said Tuesday, getting choked up. “I don’t think there’s anything funny about it.”Kimmel went on: “Nor was it my intention to blame any specific group for the actions…
JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon this week spoke out against Trump’s plan to charge $100,000 for visa applications for skilled overseas workers. In an interview with CNBC in Mumbai, India, Dimon said he supports “merit-based immigration ” and expects employers who rely on the program to object to the president’s executive order, signed late Friday.”I would beg the president,” he said. “He has accomplished border control, that’s great, I mean, I think all nations want real border control, that helps make a nation, but after that, we should have good immigration,” he said.Dimon said employers use H-1Bs “because they need the expertise.””And…
Disney’s decision to reinstate “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” has raised the tension of ABC’s showdown with local TV broadcasters.Although ABC is bringing Jimmy Kimmel back on Tuesday night, Sinclair and Nexstar — which together own nearly a third of ABC affiliate stations in the US — said they won’t air Kimmel’s show and will instead show local news.ABC had suspended Jimmy Kimmel “indefinitely” last week for his comments about Charlie Kirk’s killer after pushback from Sinclair and Nexstar and pressure from FCC chair Brendan Carr, who warned he might review local broadcast licenses if stations kept airing the show. The stakes are…
The Public Company Accounting Oversight Board has sanctioned Marcum Asia CPAs LLP over violations related to its communications with a successor auditor.According to the settled disciplinary order, the firm violated board rules and auditing standards in transferring its workpapers for a Beijing-based company to a Chinese auditor. In 2018, New York-based Marcum Asia, which was known as Marcum Bernstein & Pinchuk, or MarcumBP, at the time, was hired by Gridsum Holding Inc. to audit its 2015-2017 financial statements. Before Marcum Asian could complete those audits, however, it was dismissed in favor of China-based Shandong Haoxin CPAs Co. Ltd.As a result Marcum Asia transferred…
Joe Rogan has had enough of the right celebrating Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension.”I definitely don’t think that the government should be involved ever in dictating what a comedian can or cannot say in a monologue,” Rogan said during an episode of his influential podcast that was posted on Tuesday.Rogan’s statement mirrored what Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, a Republican and Trump ally, said last week: Conservatives will come to regret setting a precedent where the federal government can bully media companies into censorship.”The problem is the companies, if they’re being pressured by the government, so if that’s real and if people…
Tech salaries are soaring, and corporate companies are cutting big checks to lock down top talent. From Silicon Valley giants to retailers, media companies, telecom firms, and gig platforms, the salaries offered reflect just how competitive the market has become. Thanks to data from federal filings, we have a window into companies’ salary ranges at a pivotal moment in the battle for specialized workers. The data comes from filings that companies must submit to the Labor Department when hiring foreign workers through the H-1B visa program, which allows them to bring in specialized workers annually through a lottery system.Since companies rarely disclose…
New partners at accounting firms see a gap between compensation expectations and reality, as well as between the frequency of feedback and its sufficiency, according to a new survey.Intend2Lead, which polled 110 newly promoted partners, found that while a majority (59%) of new partners saw an income increase post-promotion, 43% say it was less than expected. Meanwhile, 42% said the compensation was about expected, 10% said it was more than expected, and 5% were unsure. The survey recommends that new partners ensure they understand a firm’s compensation structure, begin the conversation around compensation early and plan accordingly. Almost half (46%) of new…
