Ken Griffin’s $3 Billion Donation Remakes Miami’s Education Scene

Successful cities and top-tier universities often exist symbiotically.

Stanford has fueled the rise of Silicon Valley. Harvard and MIT have made Boston a top-notch research city. A pipeline of public-policy wonks from Georgetown and George Washington University keeps Washington, D.C., humming.

So it’s only natural that Ken Griffin, the billionaire founder of $76 billion hedge fund Citadel and marketmaker Citadel Securities, focuses on education as he reshapes Miami, where his firms are headquartered. His latest splash: the largest-ever gift in higher education history that will bring a top-tier university to the Magic City.

Griffin, a Harvard alum who gave the largest gift in that school’s history in 2023, is now giving $3 billion to Carnegie Mellon University, according to a press release on the donation. A majority of the gift — $2 billion — will go to developing a Miami campus for the Pittsburgh-based school, with plans to begin admitting students in 2028.

“The opportunity to bring Carnegie Mellon to Miami places our city at the heart of humanistic and scientific advancement and amplifies the University’s international reach and impact,” Griffin said in the release.

The 35-acre campus in Miami’s artsy Wynwood neighborhood will “contribute to Miami’s economy and community, and advance the prosperity of our nation,” said Griffin, who, according to Bloomberg, has a net worth of $57.5 billion. He’s a major donor to the Republican Party who has funded, among other endeavors, the hiring of the current US Men’s National Team coach and a play about World War I.

His “civic engagement initiative” — known as Griffin Catalyst — has helped build mini soccer fields in Miami, pumped tens of millions of dollars into medical research at local hospitals, and funded charter school expansion in the region.

Griffin, who grew up in Boca Raton but founded his hedge fund in Chicago as an undergrad, has been the biggest whale in Miami’s rapidly growing money scene since he moved his firms there in 2022. Citadel’s $2.5 billion tower will remake the city’s skyline, and his personal real estate portfolio includes more than $250 million worth of property in the ritzy Star Island and Coconut Groves enclave, to go along with his 27-acre Palm Beach compound.

What keeps Griffin’s fund, the most profitable in industry history, churning is a constant supply of top talent. Bringing a pool of capable quants and researchers to his firm’s backyard is another way Griffin is trying to win the hedge fund talent war, while also adding to his adopted city’s clout.

“CMU Miami represents a generational opportunity to build a new center of research and intellectual life — one that will attract exceptional students, scholars, and researchers from across the globe and rank among the world’s most important academic institutions,” Griffin said in the release.
