Two Big-Name Macro Traders Are Out at ExodusPoint

A pair of pedigreed traders have left Michael Gelband’s ExodusPoint Capital, two people familiar with the matter told Business Insider.

Chris Wheeler and Daniel Dangoor, each of whom ran their own macro investing team for the $15.5 billion hedge fund, are no longer at the firm.

The pair were based in ExodusPoint’s Dubai offices and had joined the manager less than a year ago in separate moves. ExodusPoint declined to comment. Wheeler and Dangoor did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Wheeler started at the firm last December after stints managing money for Michael Platt’s BlueCrest Capital and Ken Griffin’s Citadel.

Dangoor, meanwhile, only started in June as a senior portfolio manager after a one-year stint at Goldman Sachs’ London office, where he was the firm’s head of macro thematic trading. He’s also previously traded for SPX Capital and Brevan Howard.

It’s unclear what the two PMs focused on within the broader macro world, but there’s been plenty of pain across many British, Swiss, and Emirati trading desks recently.

Macro firms, including Diego Megia’s Taula Capital, have been caught off guard by interest-rate increases and broader fiscal shocks across Europe, most notably in France, which has seen prolonged protests and rioting amid potential budget cuts.

PivotalPath’s discretionary macro index has returned only 3.5% through September this year, trailing the industry composite, which is up 6.7%.

Among its multi-strategy peers, ExodusPoint is lagging behind more equity-heavy firms through September. The manager has returned 4.1% for the year after a loss of 0.7% last month, Business Insider previously reported.
